LightJet UV Laser Marking Machine

The LightJet UV laser marking machine creates precise, permanent codes on plastics, glass and other sensitive materials. Specifically, its 355 nm ultraviolet laser produces a small focal point with minimal heat transfer to the product. As a result, manufacturers can add high-contrast traceability codes while reducing surface damage, melting and deformation.

Why Choose the LightJet UV?

Traditional laser systems can generate excessive heat when marking thin plastics or delicate packaging. In contrast, the LightJet UV uses a solid-state ultraviolet laser to create detailed marks with a controlled heat-affected area.

Consequently, the system works well for demanding applications involving HDPE, LDPE, polypropylene, PET, polycarbonate and glass. It can also mark selected metals, coated surfaces and additional materials after application testing.

Because laser marking alters the material surface, the resulting code resists smearing and routine handling. Therefore, the LightJet UV eliminates many problems associated with wet ink, including drying time, clogged printheads and recurring ink consumption.

Precision Coding and Traceability

The LightJet UV can produce text, numbers, graphics, logos and symbols. Moreover, it supports automated date, time, lot, batch and sequential-number coding.

Available machine-readable formats include:

  • QR codes
  • Data Matrix codes
  • Aztec codes
  • Han Xin codes
  • OCR characters
  • Code 39
  • Code 93
  • Code 128A, 128B and 128C

These capabilities support product identification, regulatory coding, anti-counterfeiting and supply-chain traceability. However, code quality depends on the substrate, production speed, marking field and required content. Therefore, Ameripak recommends sample testing before final system selection.

LightJet UV Marking Speed

The LightJet UV can mark up to 2,000 characters per second under suitable conditions. In addition, published line speeds reach up to 200 meters per minute, or approximately 656 feet per minute.

Actual performance, however, depends on the message complexity, marking area, substrate and required contrast. Larger codes and complex graphics may require additional marking time. Consequently, the application should determine the expected production rate rather than the maximum published speed alone.

Digital high-speed galvanometer scanners steer the laser beam across the marking field. As a result, the machine can create detailed codes without mechanical contact with the product.

Available LightJet UV Marking Fields

The standard F160 focusing option provides a marking field of approximately 100 × 100 mm, or 3.9 × 3.9 inches. Alternatively, optional focusing configurations provide different field sizes:

  • F100: 70 × 70 mm
  • F160 standard: 100 × 100 mm
  • F210: 140 × 140 mm
  • F254: 170 × 170 mm
  • F300: 220 × 220 mm

A smaller field generally supports a finer focal point. Conversely, a larger field accommodates bigger codes, graphics or multiple marked areas. Therefore, character height, code dimensions and product positioning should guide the lens selection.

Controls and Production-Line Integration

A touchscreen interface gives operators access to message creation, product setup and operating controls. Furthermore, the system supports standard industrial fonts and Windows TrueType fonts.

For automated production lines, the LightJet UV provides UDP, TCP/IP and RS232 communication. Inputs for an encoder and product detector also help synchronize marking with product movement.

Additionally, four inputs and four outputs support start and stop signals, interlocks and alarms. Flexible beam-delivery options can simplify integration around conveyors and existing machinery. Therefore, the marking head can accommodate a range of production-line layouts.

Maximum marking and line speeds depend on the application. Therefore, Ameripak will verify the substrate, code requirements, line speed and installation environment before specifying the complete system.

LightJet UV or Another Coding System?

The LightJet UV offers an excellent solution for detailed, high-contrast marking on plastics, glass and heat-sensitive products. However, applications involving paper, corrugated board, wood or other organic materials may be better suited to the LightJet CO2 laser marking machine.

Alternatively, operations that prefer ink-based coding can consider the DuraCode Touchscreen continuous inkjet printer. A continuous inkjet system can apply codes to porous and nonporous materials without altering the substrate surface. Therefore, code requirements, material response and ongoing operating costs should guide the final technology choice.

Ameripak Support for the LightJet UV

Ameripak helps integrate the LightJet UV into new or existing production lines. First, the team reviews the material, product geometry and required code. Next, Ameripak evaluates line speed, available marking time, focal distance and communication requirements. Finally, sample testing helps confirm code contrast, readability and permanence before installation.
